I’m interested in doing some cave trekking in Phong Nha but unsure whether to join guided tours or try to explore independently. I have decent hiking experience but no cave exploration background. Are there caves that are safe and legal to explore without guides, or is it better to always go with organized tours? My main interests are seeing unique geological formations and maybe some underground rivers rather than extreme adventure challenges. Cost is a consideration since guided tours seem quite expensive, but safety is obviously the priority. Has anyone done self-guided cave exploration in the area and can share advice about which caves are appropriate for independent visits? Also wondering about equipment needs and whether rental gear is available locally if I decide to go the guided route.
these are the self guided tours of phong nha which you can do on your own - Dark cave, paradise cave, mooc spring, botanic garden, ozo park
and here are the main phong nha caves which you have to do with guides from oxalis/jungle boss - Hang Pygmy, Hang En, Tu lan, son doong cave, hung thoong, tiger cave, mada lake, elephant cave, over cave
dude just go to the phong nha boat station and buy tickets directly.
phong nha cave, paradise, dark cave, mooc spring, botanical garden , these all you can do self guided without buying tickets in advance from third party.
what equipment you are talkin about my good sir?
all u need is yourself haha. also if you do dark cave, bring swimsuit
why pay a markup when you can do it on your own!
if you are on a budget, just do the main touristy caves of phong nha without a guide!
by the way you won’t find grab bike here. so just rent a motorbike for 150k vnd or less from your homestay and you can do most of main caves in a day by yourself
