I’m planning a solo trip from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha-what’s the best way to travel between these two destinations? Should I take the train, bus, or book a private car? How long does each option take, and which one is most reliable for on-time departure? Are there any scenic stops worth planning along the way? I’ve heard the train might be slower but more comfortable; does it actually stop close to Phong Nha? And what is the cost comparison? If you want the cheapest option and do not mind tight spaces or overnight travel, sleeper buses are everywhere in Vietnam and popular. They save a night’s accommodation but daytime buses that show proper scenery are fewer and a bit hit or miss. Private car is the fastest and most convenient if you do not mind spending more for door to door service and zero transfers.
Scenery wise you already hit the jackpot with both endpoints. Ninh Binh is gorgeous so if you have time linger in Tam Coc or Trang An before you leave. On the way there are not many must stop detours unless you want to turn it into a full road trip, but arriving early to explore the caves and karst valleys around Phong Nha is so worth it, trust me!
If you are traveling in high season or want a daytime slot, book ahead.
